Manchester United are no strangers to being linked with audacious transfer moves but perhaps their latest reported interest is their most outlandish yet.

Over the weekend, it has been reported that PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is on the Reds’ radar for this summer. The position of goalkeeper has been a controversial one these past couple of years with Andre Onana not endearing himself particularly to the United fanbase.

So, with news surrounding the potential arrival of the Champions League winner at Old Trafford, MEN Sport has rounded up what is being said about Donnarumma and his future.

PSG talks stall

According to Caught Offside this weekend, United have shortlisted Donnarumma as a target due to talks with PSG stalling over a new deal. Currently, the 26-year-old earns £6.1m per year as a base salary and £2.6m can be accrued through bonuses.

However, the Italian is looking for a wage increase and he has yet to receive a figure which he feels is worthy of his consideration. It is claimed that Donnarumma has decided not to renew with PSG and is therefore available to leave for free next summer.

In a bid to avoid this from happening, the Paris club are thought to be open to selling this summer which is claimed to have alerted United.

New transfer opens the door for United

Now, further developments in France have increased speculation that United could actually make a deal for Donnarumma. L’Equipe understands that PSG are closing in on the arrival of Lille’s highly thought of goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, a player seen as the long-term successor to the Italian.

The French publication claims that both United and Manchester City have shown interest since June in Donnarumma and that the move for Chevalier has forced the Italian to consider his options.

Onana stance

With Donnarumma being so heavily linked, were he to sign, he would be considered as the new first choice at Old Trafford. That would cast doubt as to the future of Onana and, at this stage, MEN Sport understands he is safe in his position at the club.

We believe that there is currently no set budget for a new No.1 goalkeeper and Onana has been reassured that his future this season is in Manchester, despite interest from AS Monaco. What’s more, Onana worked hard to persuade Bryan Mbeumo to join United and it is unlikely he would pack up and leave so soon after playing that role for the club.

If Donnarumma was to join, this current situation between United and Onana could change drastically but, at the moment, with other priorities for the Reds, a deal seems unlikely.
