While Northern Ireland court remains in summer recess, there have still been a number of hearings across the region this week.

Some of the cases this week heard how a blood-stained squat where a man was found strangled to death with a clothes line had been used as a base for injecting drugs. A former police officer who was convicted of choking, punching and threatening to kill his own daughter was also handed a 16-month sentence.

Also in this week’s court headlines was Armagh All-Ireland winner Aidan Nugent, who is to face a Crown Court sex trial.

Man accused of sex assault on four-year-old ‘attacked with bats’

A man accused of sexually abusing a four-year-old girl was battered days after the alleged incident and left with injuries including a fractured kneecap, a court heard on Monday.

Details of aftermath of the alleged assault emerged as a man appeared at the Magistrates Court in Derry charged with a number of offences.

GAA All-Ireland winner to face Crown Court sex trial

Armagh All-Ireland winner Aidan Nugent was ordered to stand trial in the Crown Court, facing eight charges of sexual assault.

Appearing in the dock of Armagh Magistrates Court on Tuesday, sitting in Newry, the 31-year-old confirmed he was aware of the charges against him, all of them alleged to have been committed “in the United States of America,” on 17 November last year.

Blood-stained Belfast squat where man was strangled used as drugs den

A blood-stained squat where a man was found strangled to death with a clothes line had been used as a base for injecting drugs, the High Court heard on Tuesday.

Kevin Davidson’s body was discovered hidden under a sleeping bag and bin liners in the backyard of the house on Donegall Avenue in South Belfast 12 months ago.

Ex-cop sentenced for choking, punching and threatening to kill his own daughter

A former police officer who was convicted of choking, punching and threatening to kill his own daughter was handed a 16-month sentence today.

Jailing Alan King at Ballymena Magistrates Court, District Judge Nigel Broderick ordered the 64-year-old to serve half his sentence in jail and half under supervised licence conditions.

Man beaten and slashed across face as “chaos” broke out at party, court told

A man was beaten and slashed across the face as “chaos” broke out at a house party in east Belfast, a court heard today.

The victim sustained a 15cm wound and a fractured eye socket as others attending the gathering launched an attack, police said. But one of those accused of taking part in the violence claims he was asleep upstairs in the property on Paxton Street.
