England are on the brink of successfully retaining their European title, but they face arguably their most difficult challenge yet in the tournament.

After requiring extra time and penalties to progress past Sweden in the quarter-finals, the Lionesses once again needed an additional 30 minutes to secure their spot in the final by defeating Italy. England were moments away from defeat until Michelle Agyemang’s stoppage-time equaliser in regular time, followed by Chloe Kelly’s winner in extra time.

Now, Spain pose the final hurdle for England in a rematch of the World Cup final from two years ago. In that encounter, Spain emerged as 1-0 victors; England will be hoping for a different outcome this time.

Spain also had to rely on extra time to book their place in the final, with Aitana Bonmati’s goal securing them a 1-0 victory over Germany.

England clinched the European Championships title at Wembley three years ago and are now eyeing back-to-back victories under Sarina Wiegman, reports Football London.
