Manchester United got off the mark this pre-season with a win against West Ham United on their USA tour, but gaping holes in the team remain.

Matheus Cunha has impressed onlookers in both his appearances so far, while Bryan Mbeumo’s Man Utd debut has been delayed by Ruben Amorim since he joined later than the Brazilian.

These two players add proven attacking quality to a team that was allergic to goals in the league last season, but United’s financial condition leaves the rest of the window tricky to navigate.

However, Fabrizio Romano still says that Man Utd are now ‘very convinced’ that they will make the addition Ruben Amorim is desperate for the most.

United kicked off the window in style by securing Cunha’s signature at the start of June, but the Mbeumo negotiations reflected the reality of the club’s finances.

Now that close to £130m has been committed to the pair, United are in a tricky position where, ideally, they need to sell to buy.

Marcus Rashford’s exit is a big boost due to savings on his wages, but the path for the rest of the four players unwanted by Amorim is uncertain, to put it kindly.

Still, Romano says that United are feeling optimistic about giving Amorim a player in the position he needs the most.

Speaking on the Here We Go podcast with Fabrizio Romano on YouTube, the Italian journalist said, “Man Utd will be active on the opportunities to bring in a striker next week.

“Man Utd will get a new striker because they are very convinced about that.”

Music to Ruben Amorim’s ears

This update means that Amorim has privately been promised that a new striker will arrive, which would be music to Amorim’s ears.

The Man Utd manager has been very supportive of the club’s efforts so far in the window, refusing to get into flinging passive-aggressive battles in the press.

It helps that the club have added 35 Premier League goals to his team before pre-season, but the striker was a gaping hole.

Liam Delap was expected to fill that hole, but his rejection sent United’s window into a tailspin, forcing a reevaluation of plans and targets.

Therefore, if United are now increasingly convinced about getting a new striker, it must mean some fruitful conversations have been had in the background.
