This community group is part of Porty Energy and it is calling for more drop kerbs, a smoother pavement surface, no obstacles in the way of pedestrians and visual, auditory and tactile markings.

As part of that project they are mapping all the places in Portobello which do not have dropped kerbs. This is a simple thing for the council to provide and so essential for those in wheelchairs or pushing buggies.

A spokesperson for Equal Footing Party said: “Our original drop kerb map  surveyed 240 drop kerbs on Portobello high street, and rated them on a traffic light system. The app, which is currently still in development, uses the same classification system to record where and how useable a drop kerb is.”

The group meets in person and online on the second Wednesday of every month at Bellfield. At their last meeting the group added five areas to their mapping project – The Prom and High Street, Fishwives, The Durhams, Northfield and Magdalenes.

Balerno Police Station

The Balerno Village Trust has announced a funding award of £239,500 from the Scottish Land Fund which will allow them to proceed with their ambition to retain the former police station for the community.

Police Scotland has accepted the group’s request for a community asset transfer and now BVT say this will allow them to “transform the building into a vibrant community hub that will provide smaller community spaces for use and hire and create additional after-school care provision from 2-6pm.

“We are planning to get an external provider in to operate the after-school provision and are currently seeking notes of interest from people who may wish to do this.  Our aim is to have this available from August 2026.

“We have a bit of work to do before we can get the building open.  We are currently in the process of negotiating the sale with Police Scotland and have submitted an application for planning permission which includes the renovation work, and the addition of solar panels and air source heating.  See here for details.  If you like our plans, please feel free to submit a comment in support.”

Keep up to date with their plans on the BVT website.
