Leeds’ interest in Lecce striker Nikola Krstovic refuses to go away.

The Montenegrin attacker notched 11 goals and five assists in Serie A last season and would add vital firepower to Daniel Farke‘s side.

The Elland Road outfit are in desperate need of a new forward ahead of the new Premier League campaign, and Krstovic fits the bill.

Whether a deal can be reached remains to be seen, but it may be doubtful after a new update.

Leeds seem to be continuing their pursuit of the 25-year-old, who has starred in Italy since moving there in 2023.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport has reported in its print edition (page 20, 28 July) that the Whites have sent a proposal which was rejected by the 27-cap international.

It states that Krstovic was spotted in talks with the president of the Italian club at the end of training this week, with a psychological tip mooted.

The newly promoted side needs to move on from Krstovic if they cannot agree on terms with him and the Italian club shortly.

There are doubts over whether he wants to leave Italy, and with the likes of Roma and AC Milan interested, it may be best for Leeds to give up.

The first game against Everton is just 21 days away, and considering the doubts over Joel Piroe’s ability in the top-flight, and Patrick Bamford’s omission from Farke’s plans, it is vital that a new attacker is through the door before then.

The 49ers have made great progress in the market so far, strengthening the defensive and midfield ranks with the likes of Anton Stach, Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson and Sebastian Bornauw, but they must act quickly to secure their next addition.

If they fail to sign a new striker, it could be a very long campaign for the Whites faithful, unless Piroe can be the difference maker, which remains to be seen.

Whereas, if they can get a prolific goalscorer in, it could be game-changing, both in terms of their survival bid and wider ambitions for the future.
