One person has been confirmed dead and four are missing after a fire at a holiday gîte in Charente, south west France.

The fire broke out in the early hours of Monday in a large holiday home in Montmoreau, south of Angoulême in the département of Charente.

Local authorities say that one person is known to have died and four are still missing. Four other people were taken to hospital, one of whom was in a critical condition.

The local préfecture said that the fire broke out at a gîte that operated as a holiday centre for people with disabilities, adding that the cause of the fire remains unknown.

In 2023 a fire at a holiday centre for people with disabilities in the Haut-Rhin département killed 11 people.
