Prince William and Princess Charlotte were in the stands cheering on the Lionesses in Basel, Switzerland in their Euros final against Spain on Sunday. And as soon as they secured a dramatic victory in penalties, the royal family led the way in summing up the nation’s pride.
King Charles issued a personal statement of congratulations, saying the Lionesses “have my whole family’s warmest appreciation and admiration.” “For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant ‘football’s coming home’,” the King wrote. “As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true. For this, you have my whole family’s warmest appreciation and admiration.”
The King said the Lionesses had demonstrated that there can be “no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms.” He ended the message, signed Charles R, encouraging the team to bring home the World Cup in 2027.
Prince William issued a short personal message made more special by the fact that it was written jointly with 10-year-old Princess Charlotte. Charlotte’s initial has been on family messages before for birthdays and father’s day, but this is the first time her name has been on any public message relating to the royal family’s official role.
“What a game! Lionesses, you are the champions of Europe and we couldn’t be prouder of the whole team. Enjoy this moment England. W & Charlotte,” the message read. The Palace’s social media account also posted pictures of Charlotte at the match and William greeting the players after the game.
Other royals with personal social media accounts who also joined in congratulating the team were Princess Eugenie and her mother Sarah Ferguson. “Come on Lionesses…you absolute LEGANDS,” (sic) Eugenie posted on Instagram stories. Sarah Ferguson wrote, “Wow! A HUGE congratulations to our Lionesses. You are incredible!”
