In the small town of Arrowsic, Maine, the arrival of a major broadband provider has sparked tensions with advocates for the community’s locally built internet network.

A recent report by The Maine Monitor details the conflict, which pits The Arrowsic Broadband Authority against Fidium Fiber, a subsidiary of Consolidated Communications.

The Arrowsic Broadband Authority provides broadband to the town’s approximately 500 residents, as The Maine Monitor reports. However, several months ago, the town’s residents reportedly received mailers from Fidium Fiber.

According to the report, Fidium offered broadband at a price significantly lower than the town’s pricing.

A local broadband commissioner was quoted in the report, warning that The Arrowsic Broadband Authority is “literally on the edge of maintaining that network because we have such a small customer base.”

Fidium Fiber has rapidly expanded across Maine in recent years.

In 2024, the company expanded access to over 294,000 homes and businesses in Maine.
