Sheffield Wednesday are yet to make a signing this summer.
After a mid-table finish in the Championship last time out, the last few months have been nothing short of a disaster for the Owls as late wage payments left the club with a three-window transfer ban.
Josh Windass has joined Wrexham after he cancelled his contract and became a free agent, with Michael Smith joining Preston North End in similar fashion, leaving Danny Rohl’s squad even lighter than it was.
Supporters have been worried about a fire sale, and with the club finding it tough to entice new stars to Hillsborough they are looking at young players. Now, Sheffield Wednesday have identified two starlets who have left Premier League clubs this summer.

It’s going to be a very tough season for the Owls, and the calibre of players that they are looking at will be a worry. However, there is the potential for them to develop with game time.

As per The Star, former Manchester City midfielder Matthew Whittingham is on trial in South Yorkshire, and he featured in the club’s latest friendly against Mansfield Town at the weekend. Ike Ugbo scored in that game, as preparations continue ahead of the new campaign.
He is not the only ex-Premier League youngster to be on trial at Hillsborough, with Reece Clairmont also working at the Owls. The Star have said that Sheffield Wednesday are ‘having a look’ at the 18-year-old.
The teenager left Arsenal just a few weeks ago, and plays mostly as a left-winger, with the club looking to bolster their U21s and U18s.
The Owls’ squad is looking very thin
Sheffield Wednesday face a Burnley XI on Saturday in their final pre-season friendly before the first Championship fixtures of the campaign.
With senior players leaving across the board, there are questions to be asked as to just how far behind their rivals the Owls truly are.

Whittingham has very little experience at senior level, and while he may look a talent, he could struggle with the immediate step-up to this level, while Clairmont is even further behind in his development.
Barry Bannan is still not under contract, and Leicester City may well be looking forward to their clash with Rohl’s team at the start of August.
