CHARLIE SHIEL has agreed terms on a 12-month contract extension with Edinburgh covering the 2025-26 season. The 27-year-old scrum-half will have completed nine-years with the capital club by the end of the campaign, and with Ali Price moving on in the summer, he will compete for game-time against current club co-captain Ben Vellacott as well as current academy prospects Hector Paterson and Conor McAlpine.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be extending my time with Edinburgh Rugby for another season,” who has been named on the bench for tomorrow night’s URC clash against Hollywoodbets Sharks at Hive Stadium. “This club means so much to me, being my hometown team, and to be heading into my ninth season here is something I’m incredibly proud of.

“As I’ve become one of the more experienced guys in the squad, I’ve really enjoyed taking on more of a leadership role and helping to drive standards. It’s been great working alongside the younger nines like Hector Paterson and Conor McAlpine, and I get a real buzz out of sharing my experiences and helping them develop.

“I still feel I have so much to give when I get my opportunity on the pitch, and I’m determined to play my part as we enter a crucial business end of the season, starting with Sharks this Friday night.”

Shiel –  whose father Graham Shiel and grandfather Dougie Morgan both played for Scotland – has made a total of 69 appearances for Edinburgh since joining the club’s academy ahead of the 2017-18 season, making his debut against Southern Kings in January 2019.

“Charlie has developed his game and has the opportunity to step up into a leadership role with the departure of Ali Price,” said Edinburgh head coach Sean Everitt. “He is a dependable player who brings a consistent and professional attitude to his craft every single day.

“His experience is invaluable, and he has really embraced his role in helping nurture the younger players coming through, particularly in the scrum-half position. It’s brilliant to have secured Charlie for another year and we know he will continue to be a valuable asset to the squad both on and off the field.”
