A hall-of-fame inductee has delivered a scathing verdict on Gervonta Davis‘ future in the sport.
Davis remains unbeaten as a professional since his debut back in 2013, winning world titles in three weight classes from super featherweight to super lightweight.
He currently reigns as the WBA world lightweight champion, with his most recent defence against Lamont Roach Jr ending in a majority decision draw, although many fans and analysts believe this was the incorrect decision after ‘Tank’ took a knee in the ninth and it was not ruled a knockdown.
It had been reported that a rematch would take place at some point before the end of the year, but these plans appear to have been squandered with Roach hinting that Davis will not finalise his side of the deal.
In light of Davis’ current situation, and the other issues he has experience outside of the ring including a recent arrest, retired two-weight world champion Timothy Bradley claime in an interview with Fight Hub TV that the 30-year-old from Baltimore is ‘done’ and will avoid a long-awaited unification clash with Shakur Stevenson at all costs.
“Tank is done. Tank is… hung them up, shoes off, get the bag, put a plaque up, he’s done, Tank is done, period.
“Tank has checked out mentally, Tank is gone mentally. Tank looking for the big bag, for the big bag of Jake Paul, Pacquiao, and he’s looking like ‘Hey, I’ll see you later.’
“Tank is not gonna fight Shakur Stevenson at all, at all. I don’t care how much Turki [Alalshikh] offers, give him four Lamborghinis whatever, Tank ain’t taking that fight.”
There has been reports that Davis could face Jake Paul before the end of the year after Paul confirmed talks were taking place before the Roach bout.
Boxing fans will remain hopeful that a showdown between ‘Tank’ and WBC lightweight champion Stevenson can still be made at some stage however, with the Paul fight nothing more than a spectacle given the huge disparity in weight.
