Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak reportedly agrees personal terms to join Premier League champions Liverpool this summer.
Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has reportedly agreed personal terms to join Liverpool this summer.
The 25-year-old is understood to have has informed the Magpies that he wants to leave this summer and he has not travelled to Asia with his teammates for the club’s pre-season tour.
Isak is thought to be aware of interest from Premier League champions Liverpool, who are believed to be preparing a formal British-record bid for the Sweden international.
Newcastle have been reluctant to sell their star striker throughout this summer, but they are expected to demand a fee towards £150m, around £50m more than what Liverpool forked out to sign Florian Wirtz for a British-record fee last month.
Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal have allegedly offered Isak a contract worth a whopping £600,000 a week tax-free, but the former Real Sociedad man would favour continuing his career in Europe.
Isak ‘agrees five-year contract’ with Liverpool
Indeed, a switch to Anfield seemingly appeals to Isak, with Sky Sports in France, as quoted by The Sun, claiming that the striker has agreed personal terms with Liverpool over a five-year contract.
Isak is said to currently earn around £130,000 a week at Newcastle and his entourage have been pushing for the striker’s salary package to be increased to around £300,000 per week.
The Swede’s representatives were said to be disappointed when Newcastle’s former sporting director Paul Mitchell, who left the club at the end of June, decided against entering negotiations over an improved contract last summer.
However, Liverpool are said to be willing to meet Isak’s demands and the striker has given the green light to make the record move to Merseyside.
Liverpool have spent more than any other club in world football in this summer’s transfer window, with over £250m forked out on seven new signings, but they could generate additional funds to sign Isak with the sale of Luis Diaz, who has undergone his medical at Bayern Munich ahead of completing a €75m (£64.9m) move.
Howe admits Liverpool-linked Isak’s future is out of his control
Prior to Newcastle’s 3-2 pre-season friendly defeat to Arsenal on Sunday, Howe confirmed that “things are going on” behind the scenes with Isak, while also revealing that talks have not taken place over a contract extension, with the striker’s current deal running until June 2028.
Ahead of Newcastle’s friendly clash with a K-League XI in Seoul on Wednesday, Howe was inevitably quizzed about Isak’s future once again and has delivered a fresh update.
The Magpies boss told reporters on Tuesday: “He is still our player. He’s contracted to us. We, to a degree, control what is next for him.
“I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. My wish is that he stays, but that’s not in my full control.
“We have not received a formal offer for Alex, from any club. My wish is that he stays and we see him playing again next year.”
Isak, who has established himself as one of Europe’s best strikers and a fans’ favourite at St James’ Park, has recorded 62 goals and 11 assists in 109 appearances for Newcastle across all competitions over the last three years, scoring 23 goals in 34 Premier League games last season.
