Darryl J Carrington joins us to chat about his new Edinburgh Fringe show, Out of the Box.
“This family-friendly comedy show is packed with surprises as Darryl and his mysterious box take you on a whirlwind of wonder.
Every time the box opens, it’s a new adventure: trick shots, circus performances and laugh-out-loud moments that invite everyone to join in the fun.
Darryl’s mission is to make you the star of the show (no embarrassing moments here, just pure joy!). With Darryl’s gentle, non-verbal clowning, everyday objects transform into the extraordinary.
This show is a joyous celebration of play throughout your life, whatever your age, bringing generations together through seriously skilful silliness.”
Where: Jersey at Underbelly, Bristo Square
When: 30 Jul-25 Aug

Your show is a mix of clowning, comedy and a mysterious box. What should audiences expect?
People can expect highly skilled circus skills, a backflipping dog, very silly physical comedy.
I don’t speak a single word: it’s all non-verbal, and everyday objects become extraordinary.
When I’m flyering I describe it like Mr Bean with tricks, or if Vic and Bob were at the circus.
Do you think it is possible for anyone to reach the child within themselves?
I think we do all the time, I found my old cub jumper from when I was young, and all the badges I’d got were literally all the things I love now – bikes, tech, art and theatre and comedy!
It was fascinating. I think there’s a lot of pressure on people’s inner child to be really wacky and zany.
It’s ok if your inner child loved accounting. A world full of clowns would be infuriating!
How did you get started as a performer?
I fell into it by accident; I was a painter and a sculptor creatively. When I was 19 my partner taught me to juggle, and I was hooked! i then traveled around India when I was 22 and started making shows there and never looked back.
A friend of mine told me this quote and I love it, People ask me how I got into circus, my answer is how did you manage to avoid it.
What are you looking forward to the most at Edinburgh?
Being in the beautiful city, visiting my family up there, performing my show and of course catching up with all the beautiful weirdos I call friends, it’s such a magical place.
I love watching as many shows as I can too, it’s so inspiring.
Where can we see your work after Fringe?
I’m touring the UK and internationally in 2026, so check out my socials and my website www.darryljcarrington.com for dates.
