Alberto Lejárraga, the only out gay footballer in Spanish men’s football, has celebrated his marriage to his husband, Ruben Fernandez.

Gay Spanish football player Alberto Lejárraga, who currently plays for semi-pro fourth-tier Spanish team UD San Sebastián de los Reyes, has celebrated marrying his now-husband, Ruben Fernandez, and made queer history in the process.

The goalkeeper, who came out in 2023 while celebrating his former club’s (Marbella Fútbol Club) promotion to the fourth tier, married Fernandez in June 2025, and has been steadily sharing pictures of the adorable ceremony.

The pair married at Hacienda Las Fuentes, a wedding venue inbetween Málaga and Marbella on the south coast of Spain, in front of their friends and family.

Though the husbands are now on their honeymoon in Japan (according to Lejárraga’s Instagram), the goalkeeper has continued to post snaps of the wedding day, with some heartwarming captions.

“Almost three weeks since these moments, undoubtedly some of the best of our lives!” Lejárraga wrote in a length Spanish caption.

“We’re writing this post to share all of this, but above all to say thank you. To thank the people who joined us that day. To thank all of you who took a moment to congratulate us. To thank you, ultimately, to those of you who are so happy we were able to experience such a wonderful day!”

In another post, Lejárraga’s groomsmen were pictures wearing bow ties with football players on them.

Lejárraga is the only out gay football player in the sport in Spain to marry a man while active in the league; Robbie Rogers married his husband Greg Berlanti in 2017, but a month after he retired.

Australian footballer Josh Cavallo, who recently announced his move to the UK, is also engaged to his boyfriend.

When Lejárraga came out, the 28-year-old wrote: “Thank you so much for always being by my side, during the good and the bad. Now it’s our turn to live it up,” alongside a picture of him kissing Fernandez.

There are currently only six out gay male pro footballers in the world.
