Ducklings trapped on Birmingham’s canal network caused panic for their mum until an RSPCA officer stepped in to come to the rescue.

The fledgling Mallards became separated from their mum, trapped high up between two locks on a canal by Islington Gates in the city centre on Friday, April 4.

The baby duck were perched on a high ledge while their mum circled below in a panic.

But ‘quack’ RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) animal rescue officer, Baljit Dhamia, was on hand to retrieve the ducklings and help reunite them with the mum.

The heartwarming rescue took place shortly after 10am.

Baljit said: “The babies and their mum seemed quite distressed at being separated.

“I managed to capture the four ducklings and took them down to the water’s edge to reunite them with their mum.

“They were a little bit scared to make the leap, so I gave them a helping hand back to mum before they happily swam off.

He continued: “It was lovely to see the family reunited and paddling off down the canal together.

“It was definitely a happy ending. No ruffled feathers here!”

An RSPCA spokesperson said: “We have lots of advice on our website to help the public to safely handle and transport a small animal in need.

“When an animal is in need, the quicker they get help the better.”
