The party has not confirmed why Coun Bano has been suspended, saying it will ‘investigate’ complaints

A Manchester councillor has been suspended from the Labour Party following complaints from members, it has been confirmed.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service understands Councillor Muqaddasah Bano has been administratively suspended from Labour.

The party has not confirmed why Coun Bano has been suspended, saying it will ‘investigate’ complaints.

A Labour Party spokesperson said: “The Party does not comment on internal party matters and any complaints from Party members are investigated in line with our rules and procedures.”

Although Coun Bano is no longer a sitting Labour councillor, she remains on the council as a representative for south Manchester suburb, Whalley Range.

It’s unknown when Coun Bano was suspended, but Manchester City Council’s website listed her as an ‘independent’ member on Tuesday, July 29.

The Whalley Range councillor was first elected in 2021, and won re-election in 2024, securing 2,084 votes — far more than second-placed Green candidate Billie Nagle.

Coun Bano sat on various licensing committees for the council, helping set licensing policy and reviewing licensing applications. She remains a member of the licensing committee, the LDRS understands.

Her fellow Whalley Range councillors, Coun Angeliki Stogia and Coun Aftab Razaq, both still represent Labour as they did when they won election.

Coun Muqaddasah Bano was contacted for comment.
