Madrid has taken a bold step toward sustainable mobility with the opening of Spain’s largest public electric vehicle (EV) charging hub.

Located at the Nuevos Ministerios parking facility along the bustling Paseo de la Castellana, this new infrastructure marks a turning point for urban electrification in one of Europe’s most visited capitals.

The station offers a convenient, centrally located solution for both residents and travelers who drive electric cars. With 40 charging points, including fast and ultra-fast chargers, the site is designed to make EV ownership and travel in the city more seamless than ever.

Transforming Urban Mobility in the Heart of Madrid

Four years ago, the location only offered two 50 kW chargers installed by Porsche Ibérica and Melfosur. After a comprehensive redevelopment, the space has been transformed into a cutting-edge charging hub with a total installed capacity of 3,200 kW. This significant leap demonstrates the city’s commitment to encouraging sustainable transport while making life easier for EV users.

The new facility was officially inaugurated on July 24, 2025, in a ceremony attended by representatives of the companies and institutions that made the project possible. The collaboration involved the Community of Madrid, Iberdrola | bp pulse, Saba, and NDS EV Services, who all contributed to the redesign and technical development of the site.

High-Powered Charging for All Types of EVs

Of the 40 available parking and charging spaces, 22 are managed by Iberdrola | bp pulse. All chargers offer outputs between 175 kW and 350 kW, making them suitable for ultra-fast charging. For perspective, a Porsche Taycan capable of 800-volt charging can go from 10% to 80% battery in approximately 18 minutes at these stations.

The hub is powered by two 1,600 kW transformers to ensure consistent performance even during peak usage. Furthermore, all energy supplied at this site is certified 100% renewable, aligning with Spain’s broader green mobility initiatives and appealing to environmentally conscious travelers.

Modern Features and User-Friendly Experience

Beyond its charging capacity, the facility has undergone a full-scale modernization to provide a safe and convenient experience for EV drivers. Key upgrades include:

  • Improved accessibility with a new elevator and adapted walkways
  • Enhanced security, lighting, and ventilation
  • Automatic license plate recognition for easy entry and exit
  • Integration with VIA-T for seamless payment

These enhancements ensure that users can enter, charge, and exit with minimal delays. The site also caters to a wide range of electric vehicles, not just premium models, allowing anyone driving an EV to benefit from fast urban charging.

Industry Commitment to Electrification

The project reflects a coordinated effort between private companies and public institutions to expand Spain’s electric mobility infrastructure. Porsche Ibérica, Iberdrola | bp pulse, and their partners envision this station as a benchmark for urban electrification.

Tomás Villén, Director General of Porsche Ibérica, emphasized the importance of staying ahead of demand in the EV sector: “This project exemplifies the joint effort of companies and institutions to ensure that the network of ultra-fast charging stations always stays ahead of demand, a key priority in Porsche Ibérica’s electrification strategy. Initiatives like this complement our efforts, alongside partners such as Iberdrola | bp pulse, Zunder, and Ionity, to promote sustainable electric mobility in Spain and Portugal. Today, charging infrastructure across main roads, local routes, and urban areas has fully normalized electric driving.”

With this new addition, Madrid strengthens its position as a leader in the transition toward zero-emission mobility, sending a clear message to travelers and residents alike: the city is ready for the future of transportation.
