Brandon Williams says he’s back in love with football and has the fire and determination to succeed after making a long-awaited return to action on Tuesday night.

The former Manchester United man has endured a nightmare two years, but has been given the chance to resurrect his career by Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic.

Williams came off the bench for a cameo in the 2-1 win over Sunderland at the MKM Stadium. This was his first appearance for almost two years, after his last public outing in a Championship game for Ipswich Town before Christmas 2023.

Now 24, Williams will hope to earn a deal with the Tigers and put a torrid period behind him, which has included him being handed a suspended jail sentence earlier this summer.

“20 long, hard-working months. It does pay off. Back in love. Back with fire. Back with determination,” Williams wrote on social media with a picture of himself in action, followed by quotes about his return after such a long lay-off.

Jakirovic wants to bolster his defensive ranks this summer on the left side in a bid to give competition to resurgent Ryan Giles, and told Hull Live how he’s keen to give people second chances.

“I like to help people because everyone deserves a second chance in life,” the Bosnian said. “I spoke with him very honestly, and I explained to him what I expect from him. We will be very careful, very, very slow. We have time, so we will try to help him.

“I think the quality is there because he was on a high level at Man United, so his quality is there. We need him to bring good fitness, and then we will make a decision. For me, his mentality is good. From our conversations, he’s a very normal guy.”
