Leeds United have two very strong starting full-backs with Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson, but more natural depth might be required at left-back.

Daniel Farke’s squad building for his starting lineup needs more firepower before anything else, having built from the back with robust defensive players earlier in the window.

The back four, goalkeeper and midfield look set in stone in terms of guaranteed starting options, but there is still a question regarding depth at the back.

Do Leeds United need another left-back signing soon?

Gabriel Gudmundsson at £10million looks a very smart pickup from Leeds to not only replace Junior Firpo, but also potentially improve on him, especially when looking at trying to stay in the division as opposed to dominating the ball.

However, the only backup for the Swede is Sam Byram, heading into his third season under Daniel Farke at Elland Road, surpassing all expectations with reliable performances on the left and right of the back four, and rarely suffering from the hamstring fitness issues that made his time at Norwich City so torrid.

Byram looks like a steady squad option to meet the homegrown quota, but as a right-footer, isn’t capable of being a like-for-like replacement for Gudmundsson on the left, providing width and constant overlaps in possession.

Should Leeds United look at signing Charlie Taylor as experienced left-back backup?

Looking at the free agent market for possible left-footed left-back options to add depth, there aren’t many that look at all viable or good enough.

Those with contracts into the final 12 months might be more plausible, in particular another Thorp Arch graduate in Charlie Taylor.

Having joined Southampton on a two-year deal last summer, a chance to return to the Premier League with the club where his senior career started would be en enticing offer, with Leeds having previously been interested in signing the 31-year-old.

Not only could the ex-Burnley man be a sturdy deputy to Gudmundsson on the left, but has also played at centre-back too in the top flight, giving Leeds further depth there too.

Taylor’s experience alone would be a positive in itself, but to have been such a key part of Sean Dyche’s Burnley side who staved off relegation fears for multiple seasons, Taylor would certainly feed further into the attempt to make Leeds a physically dominant side.
