The T&A recently launched its Best Pub 2025 contest.

Readers were asked to share their favourite drinking establishments, and the nominations poured in.

These were whittled down to the final 10, and we’ve been profiling each of the finalists who have responded to our questions.

Today is the final day of the competition and it is The Holme Lane’s turn in the spotlight.

The pub, which is in Tong Street, is a family-run business and has been since 1998, with Michael Buttrey running it for almost three decades.

Luke Buttrey, Michael’s son, said: “We are delighted at being put forward by our customers”.

He added: “The pub is cosy and inviting, like a living room.

“The atmosphere is really friendly and welcoming, customers are more like friends.

“We have a great selection of wines, spirits and beers on tap and the prices are reasonable.

“Our staff are warm and attentive, they remember your name and your usual order.”

The Holme Lane hosts a number of events throughout the week.

It begins with Monday Club where a quiz is put on and there is free pie and peas, followed by Bingo Night on Wednesdays and a pool tournament on Thursdays.

Heading into the start of the weekend, there’s karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights, and “more bingo and karaoke fun” on Sunday afternoons.

Luke said: “We often have special events and themed nights too.”

Over the years The Holme Lane has welcomed spiritual mediums to the pub and put on a 60s and 70s disco last July.

Luke said: “It’s like a home away from home and we always try to make our customers feel welcome and comfortable.”

The Holme Lane has a small, raised and covered beer garden to the rear.

CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) says on its website that the pub was previously a multi-roomed building but is now open plan.

It has retained three distinct areas though, according to CAMRA.

The organisation says on its website: “As you walk in, the servery is in the centre with a larger seating area to the left and a games room to the right.”

Today is the last chance for you to vote for your favourite pub.

All you need to do is fill out the voting form, which appears for the final time in the T&A newspaper today (August 2).
