David Benavidez has weighed in on the upcoming clash between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford.
Crawford will make his first appearance at 168lbs when he faces the Mexican icon, having won titles at lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and super welterweight.
Alvarez made the move up to super middleweight back in 2018 and has racked up a number of victories since, defeating the likes of Jermell Charlo, Callum Smith and Gennady Golovkin along the way. One man he hasn’t faced, much to the disapproval of most fans, is Benavidez.
In an interview with Fight Hub TV, the reigning WBC light heavyweight champion – having moved up in weight after failing to land the Canelo fight – was asked if he believes it will be a 50/50 match-up.
“It’s a good fight, more like a 60/40 only because of the weight difference but you can’t take Crawford’s skill away you know, you have to give him credit for skill, he’s an amazing fighter, he’s an amazing technician in the ring and I think it’s like 60/40.”
Though Crawford may consider retirement if he wins, or a potential drop back down in weight, should Canelo retain his belts fans will once again call for the Benavidez fight to happen.
Alvarez has made the move to light heavyweight twice before, beating Sergey Kovalev but losing to Dmitry Bivol. Though he has shown little interest in the Benavidez fight in the past, the face that the younger man now holds a world title could be a strong incentive.
