Oxfordshire County Council is looking to introduce a booking system for recycling centres as well as reducing opening days to five per week and daily hours.

The proposal has led to criticism from police and crime commissioner Matthew Barber who warned it would “inevitably lead to more fly-tipping and waste crime”.

But Oxfordshire County Council said the aim is to “modernise the service and drive efficiency”.

On the booking system, the council said: “The benefits for residents will be reduced queue times, certainty of access, site staff will be better able to proactively assist customers using the services, and there will be better availability of information surrounding each visit.”

Other policies being considered include proof of residence in Oxfordshire to dump waste, a ban for vehicles with business branding, and requiring more people to obtain a permit and limiting them to six visits per year.

There are seven tips in Oxfordshire – including in Alkerton, Ardley, Stanton Harcourt, Drayton, Crowmarsh, Oxford and Faringdon – and there are no plans to close any of them.

People have until August 11 to have their say on the council’s consultation.
