Liam Palmer will not rip up his contract at Hillsborough despite the ongoing Sheffield Wednesday crisis, according to Alan Nixon.

Sheffield Wednesday have been a club shrouded in doubt all summer. The SWFC squad has been ripped apart, Danny Rohl has departed, staff remain unpaid, but Dejphon Chansiri still holds ownership of the club.

Potential takeovers have fallen by the wayside amid the Thai businessman’s astronomical demands and with the new season now right around the corner, those at Hillsborough are highly concerned for the year ahead.

The Owls’ faithful supporters were finally given some positive news on Saturday with the announcement that Barry Bannan has penned a new deal amid interest from Middlesbrough and Millwall.

Now, it seems another who seems intent on staying despite the Sheffield Wednesday crisis is one-club man Liam Palmer, with Alan Nixon reporting that the 33-year-old has no plans to walk away from his contract.

Players such as Josh Windass and Michael Smith took the option to do so and the expectation is that more will follow suit, but Nixon says on his Patreon that Palmer will not leave as he, his teammates and everyone else at SWFC wait for the situation to be resolved.

Another Sheffield Wednesday legend set to stay put

Club captain and midfield star Bannan’s decision not to talk away from Sheffield Wednesday has drawn widespread praise, and it has only further cemented his name in club folklore.

And, Worksop-born academy graduate Palmer has steeped himself in SWFC history further by affirming his commitment despite the ongoing crisis.

Born in 1991, Palmer signed for the Owls’ academy in 1999 and barring a season-long loan spell with Tranmere Rovers back in 2012/13, the defender has spent his entire career at Hillsborough.

Playing primarily at right-back but in a range of other defensive roles, Palmer has tallied up a massive 463 games for Wednesday. Along the way, he has recorded 14 goals and 19 assists.

Sheffield Wednesday crisis paints bleak picture for 2025/26 season

Despite Bannan’s decision and Palmer’s commitment giving fans something to smile about, the campaign ahead looks bleak for Sheffield Wednesday.

Players refused to fulfil a pre-season fixture with Burnley this weekend to emphasise their dismay and put the pressure on Chansiri. With pay delayed once again this month, there is real doubt over their season opener against Leicester City on Sunday 10th August.

Now led by Henrik Pedersen, the SWFC squad will be a threadbare one even if they do travel down to the King Power Stadium for the game. 16 first-team players remain at the club as it stands, so the squad will likely be bolstered with academy players.

All eyes will be on their next decision though, with doubts over whether they will play.
