A man has been arrested after 78 homes were evacuated this afternoon (Friday, April 18) in Knowle in South Bristol.
Police were called to the scene at around 2.10pm by the fire service following reports of a blaze at a property in Queenshill Road.
Firefighters had alerted police to the scene after they discovered ‘potential suspected ordnance’ at the property.
Emergency services decided to establish a cordon and evacuate residents living nearby – which included 78 homes within Queenshill Road, Somerdale Avenue, Queensdale Crescent and Spring Gardens.
A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police said: “A number of homes in Knowle have been evacuated after information was received of potential ordnance in a property in Queenshill Road.
“We were called by the fire service at 2.10pm today (18 April) after it received a report of a fire at the property.

“Officers supported the fire service in establishing a cordon around the property and the evacuation of the 78 houses within it.
“This includes Queenshill Road, Somerdale Avenue, Queensdale Crescent and Spring Gardens.
“About 30 minutes after the initial report, officers were told of the potential for suspected ordnance to be in the property affected by the fire.
“The cordon remains in place while enquiries to establish this are ongoing.
“Officers have arrested a man aged in his 40s and he remains in police custody.”
As of 6.45pm police confirmed that the cordon has now been removed and residents have been able to safely return to their homes.
