Residents recall hearing a “Tremendous bang”

Flats have been evacuated after a two-car crash caused structural damage to people’s homes. Emergency services were called to Cavendish Street, Ashton-under-Lyne following reports of the crash on Saturday evening (August 2).Fire crews attended the scene where they used specialist equipment to make the vehicles and surrounding areas safe, no injuries have been reported. People living in two properties were told to leave their homes as a precaution due to the damage caused after one of the cars smashed into the building.
Following the incident, local councillor Kaleel Khan took to social media to inform constituents that due to the risk of building collapse, the area between Katherine Street and Cavendish Street has been sealed off until Monday where an inspection by building control officers will take place.
Local residents spoke to the M.E.N about the moment a “tremendous bang” was heard when the crash occurred. One person said: “I was in the kitchen and then I heard a tremendous bang.”I think I can remember hearing a shake, and I thought that the car had hit the flats and ended up in my front garden. They were driving at such speeds.”
Another neighbour said; “We’re enjoying the peace and quiet for a change. A lot of speed down this road. If they could do something about installing a speed bump or cameras, that would be great.”A local business owner who rushed to the site of the crash said: “I didn’t see the crash but I heard it and saw the two cars. They were totally wrecked.”I’ve been working here for three years and it’s the first time something like this has happened.”
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said: “At around 6.40pm on Saturday (August 2) one fire engine from Gorton fire station attended a crash involving two cars which damaged a building.
“Firefighters used specialist equipment to make the vehicles and surrounding area safe, with residents of two properties evacuated as a precaution due to the damage sustained.“Crews handed the incident over to Tameside Council and were in attendance for two hours and 40 minutes.”
