The Vikings got back to winning ways with a hard-fought 24-12 victory over Sheffield Eagles at the Steel City Stadium.

Allan Coleman’s side came from behind to secure the victory and snap a three-match losing run.

Sheffield were first on the scoreboard as Matty Dawson-Jones finished off a slick move out wide to edge the hosts ahead.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession and territory in the first half, Widnes were left to rue several missed opportunities inside the Eagles’ 20-metre zone, with handling errors stalling promising attacks.

The breakthrough eventually came just before the break, as Luke Thomas pounced on a well-placed kick from the returning Jack Owens to give the Vikings a narrow 6-4 lead at the interval.

The Eagles levelled things up early in the second half through a Cory Aston penalty, awarded after a high tackle by Max Roberts.

Widnes responded swiftly. A high kick from Will Roberts was misjudged by the hosts, and Ben Condon reacted quickest to touch down and restore the lead.

The Vikings extended their advantage with 15 minutes remaining as Dec Patton’s clever reverse kick caused panic in the Sheffield defence, allowing Will Roberts to scoop up the loose ball and score under the posts.

The Eagles hit back with a scrappy effort of their own, Evan Hodgson grounding a deflected kick to bring Sheffield back within six and set up a nervy finish.

But any hopes of a late comeback were dashed in the dying moments, as Jordan Johnstone supplied a short ball for Condon to crash over for his second of the afternoon and seal a vital two points on the road.
