Wirral Council has launched a Budget Task Force to address ongoing financial challenges and protect public services across the borough.
Announced by council leader Cllr Paula Basnett, the task force aims to deliver long-term financial stability through focused savings, improved efficiency, and structural reform.
Cllr Basnett said: “This is a moment for bold, responsible leadership.
“Wirral faces a serious financial situation, and we must act with urgency and unity.
“The Budget Task Force will challenge assumptions, scrutinise spending, and identify sustainable solutions that protect vital services and restore public confidence.”
The task force will include the council leader, deputy leader, representatives from each political group, the acting chief executive, the director of finance, and other key officers and stakeholders.
It was formally approved at the Policy and Resources Committee on July 23.
The council received financial assistance from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) to balance its 2024–25 budget, along with funding for 2025–26 to support necessary savings and transformation.
Despite this support and measures to address rising social care costs, the council still faces the need for significant savings.
The task force will report its findings in November.
Cllr Basnett said: “We are not just firefighting.
“This is about building a stronger, more resilient Wirral—where every pound is spent wisely, and every decision is made in the best interests of our residents.”
The task force will focus on immediate savings, long-term financial resilience, and improved financial governance.
