Still claimed Southampton, who have only signed two players this summer, are working on adding much-needed creativity to their squad.

Saints struggled to create chances during their 2-2 draw against Brighton on Saturday until teenager Jay Robinson was introduced with 30 minutes to go.

Still also pointed towards Tyler Dibling and currently injured midfielder Flynn Downes as players Saints can rely on this season.

Asked if the first 60 minutes highlighted their need to sign creative players, Still admitted: “Yes, but I think that was reflected last week as well when we were in Spain.

“We need to take care of him as well. He had a problem with his hamstrings during the week. And Tyler couldn’t obviously play this second game.

“So, we have got good players and creative players. Flynn’s still not in the team. We know that there are a few positions where we need to strengthen.

“We know that there is interest for others. We’ll just see how it goes. But I think the main positive and the big positive is that everyone is on the same line. Everyone agrees.”

Although Jan Bednarek and Aaron Ramsdale have left Saints in the last week, Still continues to work with a bloated squad which needs to be reduced.

With interest being shown in players ranging from Tyler Dibling and Mateus Fernandes to Joe Aribo and Sam Edozie, Still is confident they will offload players.

Given the overloaded nature of their squad in recent seasons, Saints are reluctant to repeat previous mistakes of signing players before moving others on.

“I think we’ve started really shifting players out and forming a squad that we can work with short to mid-term – but that’s just a transfer window,” Still added.

“The players that are on the pitch are focused on what they’re doing, and everyone in the building knows what the situation is.

“Yes, there are still players that will go. There are a few players that will come in, but that’s just like at any football club.

“We know what we’re doing. We know what direction we want to go in. So, that’s all fine,” he concluded.
