Bristol City Council has given an update on what motorists can expect from the park and ride when the A4 closes for eight days. A section of the A4 between West Town Road and Barrow Hill Road will be closed between 8pm and 6am for eight days in August.

The road will be closed as resurfacing work continues to allow buses to access the Park & Ride from the northwest of the city. The works will be taking place on weeknights from Monday, August 18 to Friday, August 29 2025.

The stretch of road will close each night between 8pm and 6am from Monday to Friday so that the junction leading to the Park & Ride site can be resurfaced. The Portway will reopen midway through the works for the August Bank Holiday weekend, from Saturday 23 to Monday 25 August.

A diversion will be in place while the road is closed overnight, that will signpost drivers through Shirehampton, along the A4162 (Sylvan Way) and the B4054 (Shirehampton Road, Park Hill, High Street, Lower High Street), then onto Avonmouth Road roundabout and back onto the A4 (Portway), and in reverse.

Weight restrictions through Shirehampton will be temporarily suspended to allow HGVs to use the diversion. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained.

Vehicles will still be able to enter Portway Park & Ride via West Town Road and marshalls will be on hand to guide vehicles wishing to exit the site overnight while the Portway is closed.

Marshalls will also allow access for the number 9 bus to drop off and pick up at the Park & Ride while the Portway is closed overnight. However, passengers heading towards the Bristol city centre and Brislington Park & Ride should board the bus on the opposite side of the road to usual during the closure.

Services 37 and X14 will divert via Park Road, High Street and Avonmouth Road in both directions, serving stops along this route.

The resurfacing works are part of the wider project to remodel the site’s bus entrance, which started in February 2025, and includes widening and reconfiguring the bus junction, adding more wayfinding, building a pedestrian crossing next to the bus junction and resurfacing the area.

Reconfiguring the bus entrance will open up opportunities to develop the number 9 service and improve the connection between Avonmouth and the city centre. It will also mean that the 3, 4, 10 and 11 bus services could stop at the site, allowing people travelling to Southmead from North Somerset to use the Park & Ride service.
