Worn Out is a fun and fresh retelling of a Grimm classic.
The show starts with an explanation of the play and how they will not be following the original story’s roots, rather putting a modern twist on the fairytale.
We still have the twelve daughters of course, but their purpose and their drive is different. A welcome breath of fresh air.
Worn Out at LOWRY

There were also original songs which were written and performed beautifully.
The set is minimalistic with there being a constant step on the right side of the stage. They
changed the backdrop with the locations and they had moving pieces of set also, which helped the audience understand where we were.
The set changes were quick and were never awkward; it was wonderfully done. Jida Akil is to be applauded for the creative sets.
Incredible choreography from Paul Smethhurst

Paul Smethhurst is responsible for the choreography and my what moves! The movements
were sharp and precise, and they were fun. Each move had a purpose and added to the songs and words they were performing. The songs also added to the story and helped push the narrative.
Zoe Morris wrote the lyrics. Each song also had a purpose to the characters. Most of
the Princesses had their own songs and it was a beautiful door into each of their minds.

When retelling a story, the narrative is very important and this was a perfect example of keeping the narrative while staying true to the source material.
“A very good retelling while staying true to the source material”
Zoe Morris wrote the show too, and as I mentioned before, it was a very good retelling while staying true to the source material. The story followed going against their government and trying to make the world a better place.
The Princesses sneak out of the castle to see their country in its rawest form. And when they discover how their father is ruling the kingdom, they rally with the rebels and fight back.
All of the actors are young, so seeing young people fighting for what is right makes my heart flutter with hope. It was a great way of incorporating real-life events into a
fairytale.
“So many great talents on stage”
There were so many great talents on stage. But a personal favourite of mine was Erin Goh, who played Rosa, one of the youngest daughters.
She was carefree and sweet and a little cheeky, which is everything a younger sister is. She had moments of vulnerability and humour, and she did an excellent job.
If there was anything I would have to mention for improvement, it would be the technical part.
The actor’s microphones kept cutting out at moments, but they all handled it with grace. They did not falter and they did not break, and I commend their professionalism and am highly impressed.
Worn Out is a wonderful independent production full of heart and soul, and is a must watch.
