Cheese and Guava or Romeo and Juliet continues at Main Hall at Summerhall until 25 August 2025.

If you want to start the day with a smile that lasts all day long, pop into Summerhall and prepare to smile and giggle along with these Brazilian performers. In a blend of Portuguese and English, the (abridged) tale of Romeo and Juliet is played out, accompanied by a plethora of songs. From Roberto Carlos to Adele and back to Sinatra, these actor-musicians sweep the audience along in a joyous celebration of love songs.
The clowning is brilliant – giant hearts, glitter balls, duelling guitars, a portable kissing booth and more keep up a stream of frivolity with a huge serving of charm. Aside from the silliness, there are heartfelt moments that, however fleetingly, remind us that Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy in waiting.
The thoughtfulness extends through the simultaneous translations – it’s often said here that we value Shakespeare’s words. When translated into another language it’s the purity of the emotional interaction that becomes so valuable. All the Portuguese speech and lyrics are simultaneously translated on a large screen upstage. Great portions are also delivered in English.
And, of course, there is Cheese and Guava for all – a delicious blend of the salty with the sweet on a little cocktail stick. Just like real love!
The stagecraft is excellent; the pace is just right; the atmosphere is truly something special. A captivating start to the day.
