It’s been over two years since Errol Spence was last in action.

The former unified welterweight world champion last competed in July 2023 when he suffered a stoppage defeat to Terence Crawford in their undisputed title showdown.

A number of factors have kept Spence out of the ring since then, but there have been rumblings in recent months that ‘The Truth’ could finally be set to return to the ring.

One man that he has been linked with is Keith Thurman, another former unified welterweight champion, who was last in action in March when he stopped Brock Jarvis inside three rounds.

Thurman has spoken out about a potential Spence match-up, telling Xicana Boxing that he once signed a contract to take on his rival, but that Spence didn’t sign it himself.

“I got one phone call from Al Haymon to fight Errol Spence, I signed my contract, he didn’t sign his. I got one phone call in my life to fight Errol, and when that phone call came I signed my contract.

“We’re managed by the same manager. There was no reason to fight Errol when he was coming up because he was going to be a superstar.”

Thurman then explained the reasons why a clash with ‘The Truth’ has never happened but says it still can if Spence signs the contact this time.

“This is the problem, Keith Thurman in 2019 was supposed to beat Manny Pacquiao. If I beat Pacquiao, I would have fought Errol Spence and it would have been a super fight. When I didn’t fight Errol, who did Errol try to fight next? Oh wait, Manny Pacquiao, but then he had a retina problem.

“Then Ugas beat Pacquiao, then you all had to watch a sh**ty fight called Spence vs Ugas. That should have been Spence vs Thurman, that would have been a super fight. It’s my fault, I apologise to all the boxing fans that Keith Thurman lost to Manny Pacquiao. We couldn’t make Spence vs Thurman the super fight it was meant to be.

“Sometimes you have to set up super fights. If young Thurman and young Errol fight, is it a great fight? Yes. But you wouldn’t acknowledge it to be the super fight it would have been, could have been, and still could be if he wants to come and sign that contract. Every Thurman is a great fight, it’s Thurman vs the world baby.”

While a fight between Thurman and Spence could still happen, it has been reported that ‘One Time’ will instead take on Vergil Ortiz in his next bout.
