Igor Paixao opted to join Marseille instead of Leeds United earlier in the window.

The Brazilian emerged as a true target for Daniel Farke and Co. ahead of a campaign back in the Premier League for the Whites.

Unfortunately, a deal with Feyenoord was ultimately scuppered by the Ligue 1 giants in a blow to the Elland Road club’s summer business.

With that being said, the LS11 faithful may have the last laugh over the 25-year-old who looks unlikely to have a smooth spell at the Stade Velodrome.

After completing a move from the Netherlands to France for over £30million [Bein Sports, 2 August], the forward would likely expect regular minutes.

This is especially the case after coming off the back of a season where the Feyenoord man contributed to over 30 goals for the Dutch outfit.

It is fair to say that this made for great reading for supporters in Yorkshire when Leeds were linked with a move for Paixao this summer.

As a result, it was hugely disappointing to see the Brazilian opt to move elsewhere when Farke would have made him a star member of the Whites’ squad, no doubt.

That will no longer be the case, but it doesn’t look to be sunshine and rainbows for the ex-Coritiba man as Marseille could be set to land another attacking signing.

Roberto De Zerbi’s side have opened talks with Lille star Edon Zhegrova over a move as discussions continue over deal conditions [Fabrizio Romano, 5 August].

The Kosovo international has been excellent for many years in Ligue 1 and could prove to represent stern competition and a blow to Paixao’s chances at Marseille.

Leeds United have last laugh over Paixao

The Whites have excellent qualities in attacking areas, but there is no doubt that there is a need for true top-level talent right now.

As good as Dan James or Wilfried Gnonto could prove to be, the loss of Manor Solomon represents a blow and certainly leaves a hole that needs to be filled.

The signing of the winger from Feyenoord could have been perfect to do exactly that, but instead, he has chosen to be a potential second-string asset in France.

Although this won’t be any help to Farke and Co., fans are bound to keep an eye on the progress on a deal for Zhegrova and what that means for Paixao after his snub.
