Gerhard Struber has explained that Bristol City are keen to progress in both the Carabao and FA Cup this season, but the head coach recognises that he will require a “big roster” with a variety of players to be able to compete on all fronts over the coming months.

The Reds have so far added four new faces to their ranks this summer with Adam Randell, Joe Lumley, Emil Riis, and Radek Vitek trading Plymouth Argyle, Southampton, Preston North End, and Manchester United – albeit only on loan – for Ashton Gate respectively.

As of the time of writing, the only major departures have seen Nahki Wells leave BS3 for Luton Town and Marcus McGuane make the permanent switch to Huddersfield Town.

With a little under a month to go until the September 1 transfer deadline, City’s squad remains on the larger side, as demonstrated by the number of players utilised over the course of pre-season. Prior to Vitek’s arrival, the Reds boss was able to deploy two separate teams against Cheltenham Town and Plymouth Argyle in the space of less than 24 hours, albeit with several youth players involved.

There is, of course, still plenty of time for further movement in and out of Ashton Gate before the window closes, and Struber has made no secret of his willingness to add another player or two. However, it would come as a surprise to the head coach if anything were to happen before Saturday’s season opener against Sheffield United.

“Nope, not that I know,” Struber told Bristol Live when asked if anything had changed in terms of incoming or outgoing business since his ‘Sound of the City‘ interview on Monday. “But we have the ears and eyes open, and the market is interesting.

“The market, I would say right now, is of a good dynamic and we will see what goes on in the next few days and few weeks. We are ready for more, and we hope we can realise the one or another new player.”

As a result of their transfer business so far this summer, the Reds appear to be well stocked in the majority of positions. While there arguably remains a lack of depth on the left side of defence, particularly with Cam Pring currently sidelined by injury, and another forward addition would be welcomed by fans, there is competition for places across most of the pitch.

Given the intensity with which Struber’s teams tend to both play and train, that strength in depth will almost certainly be called upon and required over the course of the 46-game Championship campaign.

On top of that “never-ending” workload, the Austrian is eager to see his side progress in both cup competitions, the first of which gets underway against MK Dons at Ashton Gate next Tuesday.

“I think I have, at the moment, in every position, players who can realise what I want,” the head coach explained. “But we know the season is long.

“The season feels never-ending, and you have to find a roster that is, of course, ready for all the games. Also, in the Carabo Cup and the FA Cup, we want to not jump out in the first round. This means also that we will have more and more games, and in this direction, we need of course, a big roster.

“We also need, of course, some different players in the roster, and then, I think, we are ready. We are in a good way, but the one or other new player would not be a problem for me.”
