Birmingham passengers warned to check flights before travelling after airport reopens – Travel Gossip

Birmingham Airport is advising passengers to check their travel plans with their airlines following a six-hour closure of its runway yesterday.

The airport reopened just before 8pm after an incident with a small aircraft blocked the runway, causing flights to be halted.

A Birmingham Airport spokesperson told Travel Gossip on Wednesday evening: “Following the aircraft incident today, the runway has reopened and operations have resumed. All passengers must check flight details with their airlines and follow advice issued by them.

“We understand the frustration and apologise for the disruption this has caused.

“Our teams have worked as quickly as possible, in line with strict protocols, which must be followed to ensure a safe reopening of the runway following a prolonged closure.”

Several flights out of Birmingham Airport remain disrupted today.  A TUI flight to Kefalonia was delayed by nearly four hours, with another TUI service to Lanzarote facing a three-and-a-half-hour delay.

Jet2 flights to Venice and Lanzarote were both delayed by an hour earlier today, with a Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt delayed by three and a half hours. KLM cancelled its 6am service to Amsterdam.

Earlier arrivals into Birmingham also faced delays, with a TUI service from Dalaman landing three hours after its scheduled arrival time.

The incident involved a Beech B200 Super King Air, a light aircraft. The aircraft was heading to Belfast with three people onboard when it experienced issues with its landing gear. The plane returned to Birmingham to make an emergency landing.

Its owner, Woodgate Aviation, said: “The aircraft returned to Birmingham and made an emergency landing and the main undercarriage collapsed on touchdown.”

The incident caused minor injuries to one person and is being investigated by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
