It’s been a close-to-perfect summer for Liverpool so far, with the Reds having put pen to paper on deals for Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and most recently, Hugo Ekitike. Arne Slot’s side have strengthened while on top and are looking to add the cherry to their summer transfer window cake.

Alexander Isak continues to be linked with a Merseyside move, even if Newcastle United remain steadfast in their £150million valuation of the striker. And then there’s a potential move for Marc Guehi, with Liverpool currently looking a little light in the centre-back department.

However, recent news that Chelsea defender Levi Colwill has suffered a nasty ACL injury could scupper Liverpool’s plans to sign Guehi, if the Blues swoop in there first. Guehi, who came through the Chelsea academy, has impressed since joining Crystal Palace as part of a permanent deal in 2021.

Guehi has just one year left on his current deal at Selhurst Park, with suggestions Palace could sell for as little as £40m this summer. Liverpool’s interest had been piqued by the possibility of snatching a bargain, but they could have to move fast if Chelsea reignite their interest.

At 25 years old, Guehi is already considered among the best centre-backs in the Premier League and is being touted as a future England mainstay. He isn’t believed to be willing to sign a new deal with Palace, meaning he could well leave on a free transfer next summer.

Liverpool will come face-to-face with the prospective transfer target when they take on Palace in the Community Shield this weekend. Palace boss Oliver Glasner was quizzed on Liverpool’s transfer business ahead of the match, with the Austrian stating: “Liverpool have obviously invested heavily this year with Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Frimpong and Kerkez. I don’t know if they’ll bring in Isak now too.

“They’ve been playing at this level for years, so I have to say I was a bit surprised that they were so active, but of course it also shows their ambitions. I think you can always clearly see a club’s ambitions in the transfer market.

“And it seems that Liverpool isn’t satisfied with just winning the English league; I think they want to win the Champions League. And they obviously saw that we needed to add one or two things to the squad, and they made that very clear and explicit early on this summer.”
