Benjamin Sesko arrived in Manchester on Thursday evening to complete his Manchester United transfer.
United faced competition from Newcastle to sign Sesko, but they have won the race to secure the young striker, who is set to sign in an overall deal that could rise to around £74million.
Sesko trained away from his RB Leipzig teammates earlier in the week while talks over his future advanced. He travelled on a private jet to Manchester alongside his agent, Elvis Basanovic, on Thursday evening and the 22-year-old is now set to undergo a medical to complete his transfer to Old Trafford.
That raises the possibility of Sesko being unveiled at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon before United’s friendly against Fiorentina, which is the final pre-season game of the summer.
Newcastle made a more lucrative offer to sign Sesko from Leipzig, but the player’s preference to move to Manchester was crucial and United officials moved swiftly to wrap up negotiations.
United have already beaten Newcastle to the signing of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford this summer. United were in protracted negotiations to sign Mbeumo for over a month and privately believed the London club wanted Mbeumo to sign for Tottenham, Newcastle or Arsenal.
The Reds have spent a combined £127.5million on Matheus Cunha and Mbeumo this summer, and completing a deal for Sesko would bring spending close to the £200m mark.
When a transfer for Sesko is rubber-stamped, Ruben Amorim will have overhauled his attack in a single window, following a season in which United mustered just 44 goals in the Premier League.
Sesko has 39 goals in 87 appearances for RB Leipzig and his record for Slovenia (16 goals in 41 games) is strong.
