A person that sustained serious injuries during an assault at an assisted living facility in New London has died, police said.

New London police officers and EMS responded to an apartment at 179 Colman St. around 10:15 p.m. on July 7 to investigate a report that a man was unconscious.

They said the man, who was not responsive, had sustained facial trauma and he was he taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital to be treated for serious injuries.

On Friday, police said the man died from injuries sustained in the assault.

Earlier this week, police arrested 28-year-old Matthew Ellis and charged him with first-degree assault.

Ellis is a resident of the assisted living facility, police said.

Police said the attack did not appear to be a random act.

New London police are working with the State’s Attorney’s Office to investigate the incident.
