Rangers are set to raid Sheffield Wednesday again this summer amid the ongoing crisis at Hillsborough.

Russell Martin’s side have already signed Djeidi Gassama from the Owls, and he has already made a positive impact.

Gassama scored in both games of Rangers’ Champions League double header with Panathinaikos.

Now, Wednesday are primed to do an £8million deal with the Gers, with the situation in South Yorkshire looking bleak.

While Rangers have been thriving in the Champions League, their league form is yet to take off.

The Glasgow club had to settle for a second successive 1-1 draw in the Scottish Premiership after salvaging a point against Dundee.

Although it is too early to call the two draws catastrophic, Martin will be aware of the need for more signings to boost the Bears’ league form.

Now, Rangers are interested in Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Charles, according to The Sun on Sunday (10 August, page 53).

The publication reports that the 20-year-old is for sale in South Yorkshire, but his asking price is about £8m.

Championship duo Leicester City and Southampton also fancy the shot-stopper, who came through Man City’s academy.

However, despite the Owl’s financial problems and the EFL hinting at the need for player sales, the valuation is still sky high.

With players unpaid, multiple EFL sanctions, and their manager departed, the state of play at Hillsborough is grim.

Butland has started the 2025/26 season emphatically, with a string of superb performances in Europe.

If he maintains that high level of performance, then the number one jersey should be his for the remainder of the campaign.

However, in Charles, the Ibrox club would have the perfect successor to Butland when the time comes.

The 20-year-old emerged as Wednesday’s first choice at the end of the 2024/25 season and has since been given the number one jersey.

If he remains with the Owls this term, then this should be his breakout season, and he should build on the eight league appearances he made last term.

While £8m may seem steep, at 20, the Man City graduate has a promising future ahead of him.

In time, he could present the ideal replacement for the rejuvenated Butland.
