Ken Davy has stated that Huddersfield Giants should ‘know within the next six to eight weeks’ where they will be playing their rugby league in 2026.
Davy has outlined his intentions to purchase Halifax’s The Shay stadium and relocate the Giants there while a new fit-for-purpose stadium is built in Huddersfield, although finding a suitable site approved by Kirklees Stadium has proved to be a challenge.
The Giants chairman has invested in a new surface at The Shay, with the Giants looking likely to play out of the nearby town – which is seven miles outside of Huddersfield – next year.
They are hoping to recreate the atmosphere seen at Dewsbury earlier this season, with Huddersfield playing at the West Yorkshire venue against Wigan Warriors due to a Stereophonics concert at their current John Smith’s Stadium.
In fact, Davy called that atmosphere the ‘best’ seen at a Huddersfield home game since they won the Super League League Leaders Shield back in 2023.
Asked by Sky Sports for an update on the stadium situation, Davy said: “It’s too early to say. There are a few options available in regard to ‘26. We should know within the next six to eight weeks.
“This wonderful stadium that we are in now is just too big for Huddersfield Giants, and we need to get a stadium that’s more suitable to our side.
“The atmosphere that we had when we played Wigan at Dewsbury recently was probably the best atmosphere we’ve had apart from the night we won the league leaders shield.”
Meanwhile, Huddersfield got their first home win of the season against Catalans Dragons on Saturday evening, defeating the French side 18-6.
It was another impressive performance from rising full-back George Flanagan, who scored two tries and kicked three goals.
“Hopefully it’s a monkey off our back,” head coach Luke Robinson said. “I’m probably the only coach that dreads playing at home; normally everyone likes playing at home.
“Look, it’s been no secret that our home form hasn’t been great for about two years, but hopefully now with that win, (we can kick on).”
The Giants are now level on points with Castleford and are just two behind Catalans with six rounds of their season to go.
Robinson, aiming to finish on a high, added: “Anybody that pulls on a Huddersfield Giants shirt and plays for me knows that everything’s on the line every single game.
“We’re going to hopefully play like that, first and foremost for the teammates, for the club, for Ken and for the fans in particular. Give them something to shout about and end on a high.”
