I won’t pretend to be an expert on ancient Greece, but I read somewhere that the phrase “leave no stone unturned” comes from a legend involving the Oracle of Delphi. She supposedly advised a general named Polycrates to search under every stone for treasure left by a defeated enemy – advice that came to symbolise thoroughness.

There are some horse races where we’ve got very little to go on when studying the form, but in veteran handicap chases there’s no excuse for cutting corners. The form of these old warriors is well known, and it’s exactly the kind of race where we should be leaving no stone unturned.
