A design and heritage impact statement included with the application reads: “As part of the Church of Scotland’s restricting of property, Garvald Parish Church was recently put on the market and purchased by a private individual with the sole purpose of retaining its use a place of Christian worship, either for a regular congregation or for weddings and funerals.
“Whilst the church building is in good order, the new owner is seeking to improve its thermal comfort and include sanitary facilities necessary for a sustainable future as a church building.”
The graveyard and paths are owned by East Lothian Council.
The new owner is looking to improve the building “with minimal intervention”.
Measures include improving the “thermal efficiency and reduce condensation” by improving the glazing.
It is also hoped to connect the building to the main water supply and sewage system.
