The new ICE L long-distance train has received approval for operation in Germany. Manufactured by Talgo, this will be the first high-speed train in Deutsche Bahn’s fleet to feature step-free access.

Talgo informed Deutsche Bahn (DB) of the decision today, confirming that passenger services will begin as planned in mid-December 2025.

At 256 metres in length, the ICE L train is made up of 17 passenger cars, including a control car and a multi-system locomotive

DB will present the first ICE L to the public in Berlin on 17 October. Four units are expected to enter service before the end of the year, operating initially between Berlin and Cologne. The rollout will be gradual, coinciding with the timetable change in December.

The ICE L is the first high-speed train in DB’s fleet to feature step-free access, enabling passengers to board without using steps or lifts. This will simplify boarding for those travelling with wheelchairs, prams, bicycles, or heavy luggage.

Other features include a redesigned interior with materials chosen to create a more welcoming atmosphere, and lighting that adjusts according to the time of day. Shorter carriage lengths are designed to contribute to a sense of space.

The seats have been developed based on trials with 1,600 participants, leading to changes in ergonomics, appearance, and comfort. Each seat includes a large folding table and a holder for mobile devices.

The train is also fitted with mobile phone-permeable windows, allowing signals to pass into the carriage without the need for signal boosters.

The introduction of the ICE L has been delayed by supply chain issues at Talgo and extended testing and approval processes.
