Good Friday is the busiest day of the year for fish and chip shops.

Long queues are expected at chippies across the UK as thousands of families follow the tradition of grabbing a fish supper before Easter Sunday.

Unsurprisingly, the best place to eat the highest quality fish and chips is on the coast.

The Aberdeenshire town of Stonehaven is the only part of the country to feature two takeaways in the National Federation of Fish Friers’ list of the top 40 best fish and chip shops in the UK for 2025.

And there are four more takeaways within a half an hour’s drive which also make the list.

In England, Yorkshire has the highest concentration of top fish and chip shops, with four takeaways appearing on the list

But landlocked Birmingham also features in the top 40, with one city chippy making the cut.

Hawthorn Fish Bar in Kingstanding was the only chip shop in the West Midlands to rank in the 2025 list.

The consistently-busy takeaway on Hawthorn Road has hundreds of five-star reviews on Google from loyal locals and customers who have travelled from further afield to try the highly-rated cod and chips.

One recent review described the food as ’10/10′ and the ‘best chip shop day I have ever had’ and another praised the staff who ‘go above and beyond’.

Andrew Crook, president of the National Federation of Fish Friers, said: “Good Friday is a huge trading day on the fish and chip shop calendar when businesses across the country welcome hundreds of customers through their doors keen to enjoy this holiday staple.

“Making the top 40 fish and chip Takeaway of the Year list is a huge achievement for these outlets that have all worked extremely hard to make it on there and all of which have had to go through a rigorous judging process by a panel of fish and chip experts.

“Each and every one will be dishing up delicious portions of the finest fish and chips so if you’re lucky enough to live locally to one of the shops mentioned or are keen to visit one, then it’s 100% worth it.”
