24-hour closure of main road into Bristol causing delays
One of the main routes into Bristol has been closed completely to traffic this week, causing major delays for motorists. The A370 Main Road, Flax Bourton, was shut off in both directions on Monday (August 11) and the full 24-hour road closure will remain in place until end of day on Friday (August 15).
The work is part of a major scheme to improve the condition of the A370 between Backwell House and the property named Old Angel Cottage. It is focused on repairing and improving the highways drainage system as well as the damaged ironworks.
Throughout this phase of work there will be no through access and vehicular access to properties will be from either end of Main Road, Flax Bourton. A diversion is in place during this time and traffic marshals will be positioned at key locations to advise on access arrangements during working hours.
Buses have also been diverted as a result of the closure and will be unable to serve any routes between Flax Bourton and Congresbury. The Service X1 will divert via Colliters Way in Ashton and the A38 to resume normal routes at the traffic lights in Congresbury in both directions.
Services will be stopping at the Station Road bus stop in Congresbury heading towards Bristol as normal and will stop at a temporary bus stop near to the convenience store on the opposite side of the road heading towards Weston.
The services X7 and X7a will divert via the Bristol Road to Nailsea to resume normal routes at Trendlewood Way in both directions. Passengers are advised to board or alight on Trendlewood Way. First West of England apologised for any inconvenience caused and said it was working with North Somerset Council to see if a link can be made between Backwell and Congresbury.
The council has advised people to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys. Cllr Hannah Young, North Somerset Council’s cabinet executive member with responsibility for highways, said: “We appreciate these works will cause some inconvenience but it is an essential process which safeguards the condition of our roads for years to come. We are committed to proactively investing in our roads in order to prevent future problems and deterioration.”
Following the full closure this week, the final stage of works will take place between Monday, August 18 and Friday, August 29. Temporary multi-way traffic signals will be used 24-hours a day, with works taking place between 8am and 5pm during the week. The work will be carried out between Castle Farm to outside the property known as Old Angel Cottage.
