North Manchester’s young people are stepping into a world of possibility this summer as Manchester Youth Zone (MYZ) officially relaunches after a remarkable £1.6 million transformation: a project shaped by the voices and ideas of Harpurhey’s youth themselves.

The refurb goes way beyond a lick of paint and a spruce up. It’s a bold reimagining of what a youth centre can be.

Manchester Youth Zone

Designed in collaboration with local young people and proudly part of the OnSide Youth Zones network, the revitalised space is bursting with opportunities for fun, learning, and personal growth. From football and basketball to podcasting, music, cooking, boxing, dance, and dedicated wellbeing spaces, there’s something here to spark every passion.

Open all year round for young people aged eight to 19 (or up to 25 for those with additional needs), MYZ offers much more than activities. It’s a safe space where skilled youth workers and one-to-one navigators provide meaningful support to help break down barriers, unlock potential, and guide young people towards their purpose, passion, and pathway in life.

Heather Etheridge, CEO of Manchester Youth Zone, couldn’t be prouder of the transformation: “We’re delighted to unveil our newly transformed Manchester Youth Zone. It’s a significant milestone for MYZ and we’re extremely proud of the new space and what it has to offer the young people of Harpurhey.

“From its state-of-the-art facilities to dedicated wellbeing spaces we are a shining example of how investment, vision, and youth-led design can create lasting impact, and how truly transformational spaces can change lives. We can’t wait to see it develop as a thriving hub of activity, creativity, and opportunity, for young people and the wider community.”

Youth Investment Fund

The transformation was made possible through the Youth Investment Fund, part of the Government’s National Youth Guarantee: a commitment to “transform and level up” opportunities for young people in England. MYZ is one of 140 youth centres to benefit, with the fund delivering over £300 million nationally to create or improve youth facilities where they’re needed most.

For the young people of Harpurhey and North Manchester, this investment is a show of faith in people’s futures. So be it they’re shooting hoops, starting a podcast, making music, or simply finding a place to belong, MYZ is now set to be the beating heart of youth life in the community for years to come.
