Newcastle United could see a move for Aston Villa star Jacob Ramsey blossom in the coming weeks, journalist and GIVEMESPORT transfer correspondent Fabrizio Romano has exclusively revealed on our ‘Market Madness’ podcast – with the England youngster being seen as the ‘priority’ signing in midfield for the Magpies at present.
Newcastle have only confirmed the signings of Anthony Elanga and Aaron Ramsdale in the current transfer window, whilst a deal for AC Milan star Malick Thiaw is edging closer to completion. However, after an underwhelming window which has seen them miss out on various targets, Ramsey could be next through the door once they bring in a striker, with the Villa academy graduate being in their sights.
Romano: Jacob Ramsey a ‘Priority’ for Newcastle United
Ramsey was a key figure at the start of Unai Emery‘s tenure as manager, but Villa’s progression into the Champions League and three consecutive European campaigns, alongside an injury, means that he’s somewhat dwindled in terms of importance in the west Midlands.
And with that in mind, Newcastle could get a deal over the line with Ramsey being ‘really appreciated’ by Eddie Howe, who sees him as a priority target. Romano told GIVEMESPORT’s ‘Market Madness’ podcast:
“Jacob Ramsey is really appreciated by the coach, Eddie Howe. So I think in this case, for them, this is probably the priority in this moment. But it’s never easy, you know, to negotiate club-to-club with Villa.
“So let’s see if they will be able to reach an agreement or not. It’s normal, I think, with a few weeks to go towards the end of the transfer window to have several names on the list.”
Ramsey made his Villa debut as a 17-year-old, before coming into the side in the 2020-21 campaign.
However, it was only under Steven Gerrard and Emery where he properly flourished for Villa, scoring 12 goals in 69 Premier League games from midfield as a 22-year-old – but injuries have slightly hampered his progress in the past two seasons, thanks to a hamstring injury and a metatarsal fracture.
Newcastle, meanwhile, are likely to start with their midfield trio of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, but creativity is needed in their ranks. They only boast Joe Willock at present, who could offer experience in the ‘No. 10′ role, and Ramsey could offer that in abundance at St. James’ Park if he was to make the move from his boyhood club to the Tyneside outfit in the coming weeks.
