British Gas is warning UK households to close doors on “unused rooms” as the UK heatwave hits. Parts of the country are facing a fourth heatwave of the summer, where highs pass a threshold on three consecutive days.

British Gas says: “Keep your doors closed. If you’re using a fan, closing off unused rooms during the day will keep the house cool in summer by focusing your cooling efforts where you’ll feel them the most.

“Similarly, opening your doors in the evening will get the air flowing and stop your home feeling stuffy.” Sky News meteorologist Christopher England said the high pressure that brought the warmth of the last few days via the “heat dome” effect is moving east, as low pressure moves in towards the west.

“Southern Britain can expect temperatures widely into the low 30s then, perhaps exceeding 35C (95F) in places,” Mr England said.

“There’s around a 10% chance Wales may exceed its August peak temperature of 35.2C recorded at Hawarden on 2 August 1990.”

Meteorologist Tom Morgan said there would be a “North-South split in the weather” today.

He said it would be “quite cloudy across Scotland, Northern Ireland and parts of northern England, the rain tending to come and go, but most persistent in western Scotland”.

The Met Office’s o utlook for Thursday to Saturday says: ” Largely dry overnight next few days, although some showers and thunderstorms are possible in Scotland on Thursday. Sunny for many, but clouding over at times in the north.”

A 16 August to 25 August outlook adds: “High pressure is set to dominate the UK by this weekend, bringing fine, dry, and very warm or hot weather with light winds for most, though breezier in the far south.

“After a spell of cooler, cloudy, and murky conditions in the north, especially along coasts, it will turn clearer and warmer here too. Early next week, there’s an increased chance of very hot conditions in the south, possibly with rain or thundery showers.

“Once this clears, changeable weather is more likely, with outbreaks of rain (most frequent in the west) and warm, dry interludes with sunny spells.

“Toward the end of this period, there are some indications of an increased chance of more generally unsettled weather developing, though confidence at this range is typically low.”
