Cooper, 33, is without a club following his exit from CSKA Sofia earlier this summer. He has been weighing up his options over recent times.
In this latest update regarding his situation by The Star, the Owls are poised to snap him up. He is expected to undergo a medical soon if all goes well.
Speaking after their Carabao Cup win over Bolton Wanderers on penalties on Wednesday night, their boss Henrik Pedersen told their official club website: “I’m very, very proud. We had many academy boys in the team, many debutants too. Before the game we spoke and said yes, we have a very young team but also with some good senior players around.
“But the way they performed I am very proud of them. I think there are many things with this performance, we were much more aggressive in our pressing, we won more balls high up the pitch and we also had energy to play some transitions, especially in the first half. We kept coming back from the draw and didn’t stay in the situation.”
Sheffield Wednesday close in on Liam Cooper
Sheffield Wednesday will see Cooper as someone to boost their defensive department. If he joined SWFC, he would give them another much needed option to pick from at the back.
The Hull-born man rose up through Hull City’s academy ranks before loan spells away at Carlisle United, Huddersfield Town and Chesterfield. He joined the latter permanently for a year before Leeds United came calling.

Cooper went on to make 284 appearances in all competitions for the Whites during his days at Elland Road and chipped in with 11 goals. He then left last year and has since been playing his football in Bulgaria with CSKA Sofia.

Will Liam Cooper suit Sheffield Wednesday?
Cooper would inject experience into Sheffield Wednesday’s ranks. He would also add more competition and depth to their squad.
The Owls lost 2-1 away at Leicester City in their opening game of the new campaign. Nathaniel Chalobah got their goal against the Foxes at the King Power Stadium.
They then drew 3-3 against Bolton Wanderers in the Carabao Cup last time out and played a very youthful starting XI. Pedersen’s men managed to win on penalties and will now play Cooper’s old team Leeds United in the next round.
Next up for Sheffield Wednesday is a league clash against Stoke City at home this weekend. The Potters beat Derby County 3-1 on the opening day.
